How to Customise a Plain Hoodie: Patches, Paint and Styling
Start a hoodie refresh by deciding how permanent you want the change to be. A new outfit combination leaves the garment untouched; a sewn patch, embroidery, paint or dye changes the fabric. Pick one idea before buying supplies.

Check the hoodie first
Read the fibre content and care label, and inspect seams, stretch and existing decoration. Fleece and jersey describe fabric constructions, not a single fibre. A hoodie that fits comfortably and is in sound condition is a more useful starting point than one chosen only for its colour.
Try a styling change
Pair a plain hoodie with straight jeans and a cap, or wear it under an open overshirt that has enough room. Repeat one colour in the shoes or accessory. This lets you try a different look before making permanent changes.
Add one patch or embroidered detail
Lay out a small patch on the chest or sleeve and check the placement while wearing the hoodie. Keep pocket openings usable and consider how the area stretches when you move.
A sew-on patch avoids the heat needed for an iron-on adhesive, but still needs a suitable needle, thread and method. For embroidery, an experienced embroiderer can assess the fabric and stabiliser needed to avoid puckering.
Only use an iron-on patch when its application instructions are compatible with the garment's heat limits. A cloth between the iron and hoodie does not override a do-not-iron label. There is no universal pressing time for every patch.
Use fabric paint or dye deliberately
Choose a paint specified for the fabric and effect you want. Test first, protect the opposite fabric layer from bleed-through and follow drying, curing and washing instructions. Some paints need heat setting, which must also suit the hoodie.
Dye is a different process. Match it to the fibre mix and check the required temperature before starting. Stitching may retain its original colour, and existing prints or embroidery may change. A uniform result is not guaranteed.
Care for the finished garment
Keep the decoration's instructions alongside the garment's care label. Remove detachable accessories before washing and avoid pulling or cutting loose seam threads. For more on cleaning and surface wear, read our black sweatshirt care guide.
